Portland L

We’re so proud of Portland L! His granddaughter Tovek’s Mary Lou was ranked World#1 in show jumping, together with her rider Henrik von Eckermann. Be sure to follow them on Instagram or Facebook as they continue their journey in world-class sport.

Portland L, was well known throughout Europe as a successful show jumper and a superior sire.  He was bred by the legendary Fritz Ligges (Olympic Gold Medallist), who also owned and competed with Portland’s dam-sire Ramiro.  Currently Portland L is enjoying his life as a retired show jumper at Equitop Farm and sought after sire.  His most famous offspring is Touveks Mary Lou, ranked #1 in the world in show jumping; this granddaughter of Portland L (Montendro x Pina Colada) is ridden by Henrik von Eckermann and has been consistent  in the very-upper rankings of showjumping for several years in a row.

Portland L was licensed as a two year old in Muenster, Germany. As a three year old it was obvious that this stallion would be destined for the higher levels of show jumping. He received the highest possible score of 10 two times by his Test Riders in the Jumping Category at the 100-Day Testing.

At the ages of 5 and 6, Portland L won jumping classes of the 1.20m to 1.35m Level, therefore qualifying for the German Federal Championships. In 2002, as a 7 yr. old, Portland L gained to his resumé an unbelievable record of 17 wins and placings out of 18 starts at the M and S level (1.30m and 1.45m).

In his first season of competition under the German Champion Marco Kutscher (Olympic Medallist in Athens 2004) he went on to win several S Class (highest level) jumping tournaments of National and International niveau.

These extraordinary results came as no surprise, for Portland L is a product of two sires of the century, Pilot and Ramiro.

His sire Pilot is the idol of the Westphalian breeding program, with countless offspring competing at the highest level of international show jumping. Recently, a statue of Pilot was erected at the Westphalian headquarters in honor of his contribution. To name a few of his famous offspring: the international jumpers Pirol, Panama, Pialotta and Ludger Beerbaum’s P.S.Priamos, as well as the Olympic Gold Medal winner Pedro.

Portland L’s dam Ranashun is by Ramiro; famous international competitor himself and also sire of countless Grand Prix jumpers, of which the most renowned is Beerbaum’s Ratina Z. His legend continues in his numerous successful offspring and is highly valued by all significant breeding associations around the world.

The dam Ranashun is a full sister to the licensed stallion Rodney who competed under Fritz Ligges in the International Circuit, including the wins of many Grand Prix and Nation’s Cups. Ranashun produced 5 licensed stallions and also Sport horses that won in S- Level show jumping, as well as in Grand Prix dressage classes.

Portland L’s grandmother Usch, again was a successful performance horse in dressage, eventing and open jumper classes. She produced besides Rodney another Ramiro daughter, Rauna, also successful in Open Jumper Classes.

Portland L’s own first crop of offspring immediately received a reputation of high competency in the sport and he has also produced  licensed sons. As early as 2003 his eldest offspring were champions in young horse jumping classes and as 5 yr. olds have done the same in following years, supporting their strong buyer demand. In 2004, Pirol by Portland L placed 6th in the FEI World Championships for Young Jumping Horses in Lanaken, Belgium. Pirol was enrolled in the PSI Auction in December 2004 in Ankum, Germany and sold as a 5 year old, for 155 000 Euro (Approx. $250 000).  Several Portland L offspring compete in the North American jumper circuit.

European breeders still have the chance to use Portland L through frozen semen provided by Gestuet Ligges while North American breeders can breed their mares by fresh cooled semen through Equitop Farm.  As Portland L does no longer travel for competition, he is available to breeders 24/7.

Although retired from competition, Portland L lives in our stable with the competition horses and our younger staff enjoy giving him bareback rides for fitness and grooming him for hours.  In his golden years, Portland L is as fit and as content as ever!
